Change Management Techniques Used
Change was one thing Coach Carter was very much responsible of, he changed the Richmond High Basketball Team in almost every way. Coach Carter's contributions to the team were many and of which, all impacted the team greatly. He first changed the style of leading the team, the requirements to be on the team, the amount of practices, the strictness of being on time, the collaboration within the team, the community support for the team, and the importance of every player to have an education.
To start off, he lead the team in many different ways throughout the movie allowing for better results. He made a contract that the students must not violate (it outlines that the students must attend all classes and all practices, maintain a C average, wear a tie and a suit on game days, and respect their teammates and coach). The amount of practices and the intensity at each practice was greatly increased by Carter. This made the players work towards better fitness and improve their basketball skills greatly. He put a high importance for being on time for every practice, or otherwise he punished the entire team with suicides and push ups. As the season progressed, there was constant team building through practice, jogs, games, and off the court, he achieved collaboration of his team like never before. Furthermore, the biggest change he created was putting an importance on education. He asked the teachers of his players to send him Progress Reports so he can keep a check of how his students are performing within the class.
These changes proven to positively affect the athletes. The way he led the team was first out for questioning, but soon it showed to improve the team as a whole in terms of discipline and the performance in basketball games. The contract also added to discipline and commitment which the players began to develop. Their ability and performance in basketball was also improved by Carter raising the intensity at practice and the frequency of practices per week. Collaboration within the team was a big change and a very important one too. Through collaboration and putting an importance on education, the team changed from a low morale, conflicting, undisciplined team, to a team of players with high morale, discipline, respect, dedication, motivation, commitment, cohesion, and education, some of the players even won college scholarships and were making the best out their lives.
