"One person struggles, we all struggle, one person triumphs, we all triumph" - Ken Carter
Team Building
Team Building was not a walk in the park for Coach Carter, he had many challenges to face, find ways to overcome those challenges, and in the end get good results of the team building that occurred. But before Carter even started coaching the team, he saw that the team didn't cooperate, there was a negative atmosphere within the team, this created very low morale for the team individually and as a whole. While coaching he learned that the team was dysfunctional when it came to teamwork. The team lacked cohesiveness, respect, discipline, and motivation to win and triumph for success.
Coach Carter tried to strengthen the team together, show respect, discipline, and motivation in many different ways. His first attempt was to address every athlete as a sir, and encouraged they do the same with their teammates and himself. To bring cohesiveness within the group, he stated that if "One person struggles, we all struggle, one person triumphs, we all triumph". This encouraged the team to work as a whole, both when there is struggle and triumph. To elaborate further, Coach Carter would make the team work together on punishments for the players who came in late, or celebrate together as a team upon victory. Discipline was addressed to players through punishment of fitness during practice or punishment of being kicked off of the team or not allowed to play the next game. Whenever a player showed unsportsmanlike conduct Carter would punish the player and sometimes the entire team. Motivation was brought into the team when Carter delivered his powerful and inspirational speeches.
His speeches united the team together to remember that all the player's goals are the same, which is to become champions and be undefeated. His speeches not only pushed and motivated the team players to play their hearts out each every minute on the floor, but his speeches also inspired the players to be the best they could possibly be on and off the court. The team got better at the game of basketball as well as develop good relationships with their teammates and coach through consistent team building from encouragement, realization of what they could achieve together as a team, punishments as a team, celebrations as a team, being disciplined to show respect to both their opponents and their team, and most of all through the powerful, mind changing, and inspirational speeches by Coach Carter.
